Lament
Cao Zhi
Streams of light play softly on the tower, it seems the moon is loath to move away. For here's beauty wilting, tender sighs telling of a tender heart in pain. Who may it be? A wife in name, in truth a widow.
“Alone! alone all these years. I know I'm going to the bottom, even as mud in a puddle, while you — you're like the dust on the highroad, drawn upward in a dizzy whirl. Originally of the same clay, we are now far apart. When, if ever, are we to meet again?
“Would that I were the wind, that I could rush across the land to your embrace! But if you shut me out, where should I go?”
(翁显良译,选自《古诗英译》,北京出版社)
Lamentations
The bright moon is shining o'er the hall aglow;
Its crystal light is moving quiet and slow.
There is a lady in deep distress upstairs,
Who sighs and sighs, in deepest grief, despairs.
Who is she that leads so sad a life?
The answer is, she is a rover's wife.
Since her man left home a dozen years ago,
She has been living quite alone in woe,
“You're like the dust that flies high in the air
While I'm like the mud that sinks down there.
Now that we are indeed a world apart,
When can we meet and talk heart to heart?
Oh that I be a breeze blowing south and west
That travels a long distance into your breast.
If you don't want to bare your breast for me,
On whom shall I rely and what shall I be?”
(许渊冲译,选自《汉魏六朝诗选:汉英对照》,海豚出版社)
Seven Sorrows
The moon gleams on the high pavilion,
its light flowing, shimmering.
There, high on the pavilion, see a woman,
sighing mournfully, enduring her sorrow.
Ask who she is, the one who endlessly sighs.
She is one whose husband is far from home.
“My lord has been absent for a good ten years,
and all this time I have led my lonely life.
My lord, you are like the light dust on the road,
your woman the silt in dirty water.
Rising and sinking, they have their ways,
but when can they unite in harmony?
I'd like to be the southwest wind
and flow into your breast, my lord.
But your breast would not open.
What is there left to rely on, for a humble woman?”
(吴伏生、Graham Hartill 译,选自《三曹诗选英译》,商务印书馆)
